But to me, this poem...I don't know Ted Kooser. But to me, this poem is about either marriage or a long lasting relationship. Of course, the title is a clue. The poet is addressing the person he is sharing his life with. He is talking at once to someone he knows and to a stranger ---and the fascination toward that loved one never stops. And there is that distant place where the other cannot enter, no matter how intimate the relationship. At times the familiar becomes a cold place.
